On March 11, 1987, Dana Carvey made his first appearance on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson. At the time, Carvey’s star was just starting to rise as he was a young cast member on Saturday Night Live, and Carson had never met him before until shortly before the interview. That is what made Johnny Carson so great. He was the ultimate professional and was so engaging during his interviews whether he had known you forever or had just met you.

In 1981, rock n’ roll legends Queen teamed up with David Bowie for one of their most memorable songs. Under Pressure was a number one hit in the UK and a top 30 hit on the Hot 100 charts in the US. Unfortunately, Bowie and Queen never performed the song live together.

Enjoy this look back at Queen live in Montreal in 1981 performing Under Pressure!

If you missed it in ’92, David Bowie and Annie Lennox teamed up to perform Under Pressure at a tribute concert for Freddie Mercury who had passed away the year before. Enjoy their incredible performance as well!

John Candy and Tom Hanks Impersonate Swedish Scientists in 1984’s ‘Splash’

January 12, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

There are so many great scenes in 1984’s Splash starring Tom Hanks, John Candy, Eugene Levy, and Daryl Hannah. In one of our favorite scenes in the movie, Tom Hanks and John Candy’s characters impersonate Swedish scientists in order to break into a secret lab where Madison, the Mermaid, played by Daryl Hannah has been taken. Everything was going along as planned until they encounter a security guard who speaks Swedish. The guard starts asking them what they’re doing so far from Sweden, and Freddie Bauer’s (John Candy’s) endless hours of watching adult movies comes in handy as he answers the guard in Swedish with a line he’s heard 1,000 times in the movies.

Enjoy this look back at Tom Hanks and John Candy as Swedish scientists in 1984’s Splash!

Bob Saget Visits The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1989

January 11, 2022 By the80sruled 1 Comment

On January 4, 1989, Bob Saget stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and shared some baby pictures he had bought from an antique store. The store claimed the photos were authentic baby pictures of Johnny, Ed, Doc, and Fred de Cordova, the producer of the show. You’ve got to see the photos to appreciate the bit. Ed’s photo was our personal favorite.

Saget then told a story about having gohers in his backyard and calling up Walter the Gopher man. Throughout the entire interview, Saget had Johnny laughing and smiling, which is what Saget was known for throughout his career. Someone who just wanted to make people laugh and smile.

The Ghostbusters “He Slimed Me” Scene

January 10, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

There are so many awesome scenes from 1984’s Ghostbusters, but one of our absolute favorites is when the Ghostbusters go out on their first call to find a green ghost known as Slimer inhabiting the walls of a hotel. Ray, played by Dan Aykroyd sees chubby, gluttonous Slimer first, but before he can zap him, he vanishes through a wall in the hall, and Venkman, played by Bill Murray is next to see him, but before he can move out of the way, Slimer slams into him. When Ray reaches Venkman, he’s on the ground covered in slime and utters, “He slimed me…” LOL

On September 26, 1980, Steve Martin dropped by the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Martin always did something different/crazy when he came on the show, and in this episode, he does his “Wild & Crazy Guy” standup routine and then sits down with Johnny and orders dinner while talking about his upcoming projects. It’s vintage Steve Martin, and Johnny’s reaction when his food is delivered is priceless.

In 1987, Carly Simon recorded a live two-day concert on the shores of Martha’s Vineyard for HBO called Carly Simon: Live from Martha’s Vineyard. She received a Cable ACE Award nomination for Performance in a Music Special in 1988 for the performance.

It’s hard to beat this setting for an outdoor concert, and Simon sounded amazing.

Simon sang some of her biggest hits during the concert including Anticipation, Coming Around Again, and Nobody Does It Better from the 1977 The Spy Who Loved Me soundtrack.

Full House aired on ABC from September 22, 1987 to May 23, 1995 for eight seasons and 192 episodes. The show starred John Stamos, Bob Saget, Dave Coulier, Candace Cameron, Jodie Sweetin, and twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. For those of us who were teens in the ’80s, we literally watched the “Tanner” kids grow up before our eyes both on the show and in the public eye.

Sadly, Bob Saget passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 9, 2022. He was only 65 years old. May you rest in peace Bob. You will be sorely missed by so many.

Superman IV – ‘No Pain, No Gain Gym’ Scene

January 9, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Superman IV was the last Superman film to feature Christopher Reeve as Superman. It was released to theaters in July 1987. It wasn’t as successful at the box office as the previous films, but there were still so many great scenes in this movie. One of our favorite scenes is when Clark Kent goes to the gym with the new editor of the Daily Planet, Lacy, played by Mariel Hemingway. He does his best to act like he’s a complete wimp until the very end when Lacy is leaving the gym and he chunks a ton of weights over to the jerk in the gym who first told him “No pain, no gain.”

Clint Eastwood in 1988’s ‘The Dead Pool’ – “Do you have any kids, Lieutenant?” Scene

January 9, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

1988’s The Dead Pool was the fifth and final film in the Dirty Harry film series starring Clint Eastwood. All five of the films are classics, and this scene in the final installment is one of our favorites from the movie. In this clip, Harry’s Lieutenant is trying to get Harry to buddy-up to the press, but Harry’s having none of it. Our favorite part of the clip is when Harry asks his Lieutenant if he has any kids, and when he says no, Harry says, “Lucky for them.”

Super Password aired on NBC for 1,152 episodes from September 24, 1984 to March 24, 1989. Kids today probably don’t realize how big game shows were in the ’80s, and Super Password was one of the best because it featured two celebrities and two contestants who attempted to guess a mystery word using only one-word clues.

In this episode though of Super Password All Stars in 1986, the Lucille Ball, Betty White, Estelle Getty, and Ann Dusenberry were the celebrity guests. What’s so cute about this episode is how Lucille Ball cracks up at almost everything Betty White says.

Sixteen Candles was another great ’80s movie from John Hughes. It was the first movie that Hughes had directed. It starred Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall, and Michael Schoeffling in a coming-of-age comedy. The final scene in the movie is so ’80s and so perfect! Our favorite part of this scene is when Jake is walking Sam to his car and Sam’s dad looks over and she mouths, “This is the boy!!!” and he gives her the OK symbol.

Sidney Poitier and Tom Berenger in ‘Shoot to Kill’ the Bear Scene

We lost another acting legend this week with the passing of Sidney Poitier at the age of 94. Poitier’s first movie was 1947’s Sepia Cinderella where he was an extra in the film. During his acting career, Poitier was the first black person and first Bahamian to win the Academy Award for Best Actor. He received two Academy Award nominations, ten Golden Globes nominations, two Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, six BAFTA nominations, eight Laurel nominations, and one Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) nomination.

In 1988, Poitier starred in his first movie in ten years when he teamed up with Tom Berenger in Shoot To Kill, a buddy cop action thriller. In one scene in the movie, Poitier and Berenger’s characters are hiking in the woods and stumble upon a huge bear. I love this scene. It has suspense, drama, and humor. If you’ve never seen this before, I promise you’ll enjoy it.

In the ’80s, if you wanted to have a hit single, you teamed up with Kenny Rogers and recorded a duet. Kenny scored four top 20 hits on the Hot 100 charts and four top 20 hits on the country charts with duets with some of the most popular country and pop singers of the ’80s.

His first big duet of the ’80s was 1980’s Don’t Fall In Love With A Dreamer with Kim Carnes. The song was a top five hit on the Hot 100, AC, and Country charts peaking at numbers four, two, and three respectively. Kenny’s second big duet of the ’80s came in 1983 when he and Sheena Easton scored a number one hit on the country charts as well as a top ten hit on the Hot 100 and a top five on the AC charts with We’ve Got Tonight. Enjoy this look back at Kenny and Sheena performing We’ve Got Tonight from 1983!

Islands in the Stream hit number one on almost every chart in the world including the Hot 100, AC, and Country charts in the US. The following year in 1984, Kenny teamed up with Kim Carnes and James Ingram for another number one song on the AC charts with What About Me?, which also peaked at number 15 on the Hot 100 charts.
