June 19, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Lethal Weapon starred Mel Gibson and Danny Glover. It was released in theaters on March 6, 1987 and brought in over $120 million at the box office. Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) is a former Special Forces soldier whose wife was killed in a car accident about three years prior to him being partnered up with Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover). In this famous scene from the movie, Riggs goes up to talk to a potential suicide jumper, and instead of talking him down, he handcuffs himself to the jumper, and then jumps off the building. It’s classic Riggs!

The Group Therapy Scene from The Breakfast Club

June 15, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

The Breakfast Club was released in February, 1985, and is one of our favorite movies of all time. It starred Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy, five members of the “Brat Pack”, a nickname given to a group of Gen X actors who frequently appeared together in ’80s coming-of-age movies. Rob Lowe, Andrew McCarthy, and Demi Moore were also members of the Brat Pack. The movie follows the characters through a Saturday of detention at school.

In this famous scene from the movie, the five detainees talk about why they are in detention. This informal “therapy session” reveals that they all have more in common than they thought even though they are all from separate walks of life. Enjoy and if you’ve never seen the full movie, you owe it to yourself to watch it. Enjoy The Breakfast Club’s therapy scene!

Ronald Stands Up To a Bully for Kenneth in ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ from the ’80s

June 12, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Before Patrick Dempsey was Doctor McDreamy in Grey’s Anatomy, he was Ronald Miller, a high school nerd in the ’80s movie Can’t Buy Me Love who paid a popular cheerleader (Cindy Mancini played by the late Amanda Peterson) $1,000 to “date” him. Ronald was convinced that dating Cindy would make him popular, and it worked for a while. But, Ronald took his newfound popularity a little too far, and Cindy outed him one night at a party.

This time though, not only was Ronald shunned by the popular crowd, but also by his nerdy friends. However, in this scene, Ronald comes to the rescue of his best friend Kenneth when he starts getting bullied by one of the popular kids at school. Ronald’s speech is a perfect anti-bullying speech for any generation, and of course, Ronald eventually gets the girl.

Nerds, jocks. My side, your side. Man, it’s all bullsh*t. It’s hard enough just trying to be yourself. I know cause I messed up. I tried to buy my way in. But Kenneth, he’s not trying to buy anybody, he’s just trying to make friends; being himself.

Top Gun Volleyball Scene

June 12, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

The volleyball scene from Top Gun is one of the most famous (and strange) scenes from the entire movie. It doesn’t really have much to do with the movie, and according to director Tony Scott:

I didn’t have a vision of what I was doing other than just doing soft porn. I knew I had to show off all the guys, but I didn’t have a point of view, so I just shot the sh*t out of it. I got the guys to get all their gear off and their pants and sprayed them in baby oil.

via Cinemablend.com.

So, the famous volleyball scene’s entire purpose was just to show off the bodies of Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Rick Rossovich. Apparently, Anthony Edwards wasn’t part of Scott’s shirtless vision although he was the only smart one wearing shorts on the beach in the sand.

Enjoy this look back at the famous volleyball scene from Top Gun featuring Kenny Loggins’ Playing With The Boys, and now there’s the famous flag football on the beach scene from Top Gun Maverick, which I’m pretty sure was filmed for the exact same reasons as the volleyball scene was back in the ’80s. Enjoy a look at it as well!

The Best Cooler in the Business – Three Simple Rules from Dalton in Road House

June 10, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

This is one of our favorite scenes from the movie Road House. The Double Deuce has hired the best cooler in the business and his name is Dalton (Patrick Swayze)! In this scene, Dalton gives the staff of the Double Deuce three simple rules to remember:

1. Never underestimate your opponent. Expect the unexpected.

2. Take it outside. Never start anything inside the bar unless it’s absolutely necessary.

3. Be nice. Until it’s time to not be nice!

Great advice for life actually! Enjoy a look back at this awesome clip from Road House.

Richard Dawson’s Heartfelt Farewell Speech on the Family Feud 1985 Finale

June 2, 2021 By the80sruled 1 Comment

Richard Dawson gave a heartfelt goodbye to Family Feud on June 14, 1985. During his final speech, Dawson talked about why he kissed so many contestants and how his mother inspired him to appreciate people of all races and colors.

Below is the video of Dawson’s farewell speech, and here is the text of his speech. No matter what you thought about Dawson and his tendency to get a little too close to female contestants, his words in his farewell speech are truly inspiring.

So, the Mackins were our final winning family, and they’ve won $5,504, and I’m proud of ’em. I’ve had the most incredible luck in my career. I’ve done lots and lots of jobs, and I’ve never, ever had a job like “Family Feud.” I’ve never DREAMED I would ever have a job where so many people could touch me and I could touch them. And it was… there was a great magic about this show that I’ve never seen on any other show. I want to publicly acknowledge Howard Felsher, who is our Executive Producer.

He was a producer in the beginning of the show, and he helped steer and guide the way that we went. And he and I fall a lot of times, but I tell you that he is important and I should acknowledge him, because he was the one, with me, that, we said, “Let ANYBODY come on this show, anyone that can play this game, no matter what color or creed, no matter if they’re in a wheelchair or they have no sight.” And we’ve HAD everybody on this show, and he was very, very important in that and I acknowledge and thank him for it. I thank my crew, and I thanked my director already. I have the best staff you’ve ever dreamed of. You can’t… but you don’t have to dream of them, ’cause I’m gonna take them with me. Even if I never work again, they’ll just be near me. They are so special and wonderful. ABC – Jackie Smith, Wally Weltman, Joe C. Albott – they kept us on the air probably a year more than they should have, ’cause we weren’t really helping them. You know, our ratings weren’t that good. They were so great. They buried themselves carrying us, and I love them for that, not that I wanted to hurt ’em, but I… because I love ’em. They were good people.

There were people I know that got upset that I kissed people; I kissed them for luck and love, that’s all. That’s what my mother did to me. There were people upset that I would embrace or hug someone of another color. The first time I ever saw people of any color was when D-Day left from my hometown in England, to go and free Europe from the war. And there was every color you could imagine, and I’d not seen that in England. And I asked my mother about it; I said, “Is there something wrong?” She said, “God… God makes people. You understand that, don’t you?” And I said, “Yeah!” She said, “Who makes a rainbow?” I said, “God.” She said, “I never presumed to tell anyone who could make a rainbow what color to make children.” And she changed my whole life with that statement.

All I can tell you is, this has been a very special 9 years of my life! If I never do another thing, I’ve met the good, sweet people of the world. So I leave you, with love, and for the little girl that, nine years ago, I first signed to – I guess she’s 13, now – I’ll think of you every day. God bless all the little children in the world. Thank you.

In 1987, Hogan was asked to co-host the 59th Academy Awards with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn. During the show, Hogan made one of the best speeches we’ve ever heard at the Academy Awards. Enjoy this little piece of Oscars history! Here’s Crocodile Dundee’s candid speech from the ’87 Oscars!

In 1984, the Pet Shop Boys released their debut single West End Girls. The original version didn’t make much of a splash on the charts peaking at number 121 in the UK. But, the next year in 1985, they released their first studio album called Please, and re-released West End Girls as the first single from the album, and their lives were changed forever. West End Girls was a massive hit worldwide topping the charts in the UK, Canada, and in the U.S. They would go on to score four more top ten hits on the Hot 100 charts in the ’80s with Opportunities (Let’s Make Lots of Money) in ’86, It’s a Sin in ’87, What Have I Done To Deserve This? with Dusty Springfield, and Always on My Mind, both in ’87 as well.

Enjoy this look back at the music video that started it all. Here’s West End Girls from the Pet Shop Boys as well as a live performance of the original version from 1984!

In 1986, The Human League released their fifth studio album Crash. The album produced their second number one hit on the Hot 100 charts with Human. Five years earlier, they had scored their first number one song on the Hot 100 charts with Don’t You Want Me.

AllMusic journalist Dave Thompson described Human as a “lovely romantic ballad. The lyrics make much of human mistakes and the need for human forgiveness in a thoroughly romantic context.” Enjoy this look back at The Human League’s music video for their second number one song Human.

Never Tear Us Apart was the fourth single released from INXS’s 1987 Kick album, which is considered one of the greatest albums released during the ’80s. The first four singles released from Kick were top ten hits on the Hot 100 charts with the first single Need You Tonight going to number one. Never Tear Us Apart peaked at number seven on the Hot 100 charts and number five on the Mainstream Rock charts.

On 27 November 1997, lead singer Michael Hutchence’s funeral was held at St Andrew’s Cathedral, Sydney. His casket was carried out of the cathedral by members of INXS and by his younger brother, Rhett; Never Tear Us Apart was played in the background.

Skid Row – ‘Piece of Me’ Music Video from 1989

Skid Row’s 1989 self-titled debut album was an awesome album that spawned three top 30 rock hits with Youth Gone Wild, 18 and Life, and I Remember You. And, 18 and Life and I Remember You were both top ten hits on the Hot 100 charts. For some unexplainable reason, the fourth single from the album Piece of Me didn’t chart on either the Rock or Hot 100 charts. But, it was a huge fan favorite in concerts and remains one of our favorite songs from the Skid Row!
