10 Things You Didn’t Know About Cobra Starring Sylvester Stallone

July 26, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Cobra was a 1986 movie that starred Sylvester Stallone as Lieutenant Marion “Cobra” Cobretti. Stallone wrote the screenplay for the movie, which was loosely based on the novel Fair Game by Paula Gosling, from ideas he originally conceived during pre-production for Beverly Hills Cop, in which he was originally cast as Detective Axel Foley.

Stallone wanted to make Beverly Hills Cop less comedic and more action-oriented, but the studio rejected his ideas because they were way too expensive. Stallone left the project and Eddie Murphy was brought in to play the lead role, which was probably a good move for both Stallone and Murphy!

Minty Comedic Arts put together 10 things you didn’t know about Cobra, and it’s well worth the watch! Enjoy this look back at Stallone in 1986’s Cobra and 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Cobra!

Cheap Trick – ‘If You Want My Love’ Music Video from 1982

July 24, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

In 1982, Cheap Trick released their sixth studio album titled One on One. The first single from the album was If You Want My Love, which peaked at number 11 on the Rock charts. While the song peaked just outside the top 40 on the Hot 100 charts, peaking at number 45, critics agree that it’s one of Cheap Trick’s best songs that has stood the test of time.

Christopher Connelly of Rolling Stone noted it was “easily Cheap Trick’s best slow song since ‘Take Me I’m Yours’ and a stunning example of what this band can do when it forgets about being commercial in these days when heavy metal rules the world.” Connelly also commented on the song’s “smashing guitar attack” and noted the similarity of the song’s middle eight to that of The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

Styx – ‘Mr. Roboto’ Music Video from 1983

July 24, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

In 1983, Styx released their 11th studio album and rock opera titled Kilroy Was Here. The first single released from the album was Mr. Roboto. Kilroy Was Here was the last studio album of original material to be released by the classic Styx lineup of Dennis DeYoung, Tommy Shaw, James Young, John Panozzo, and Chuck Panozzo.

Mr. Roboto was a top ten hit on the Hot 100 charts, peaking at number three. The Roboto costume and mask were created by Stan Winston, who would later become very well-known for his work on Jurassic Park.

From Wikipedia: “The song tells part of the story of Robert Orin Charles Kilroy (ROCK), in the rock opera Kilroy Was Here. The song is performed by Kilroy (as played by keyboardist Dennis DeYoung), a rock and roll performer who was placed in a futuristic prison for “rock and roll misfits” by the anti-rock-and-roll group the Majority for Musical Morality (MMM) and its founder Dr. Everett Righteous (played by guitarist James Young). The Roboto is a model of robot which does menial jobs in the prison. Kilroy escapes the prison by overpowering a Roboto prison guard and hiding inside its emptied-out metal shell. When Jonathan Chance (played by guitarist Tommy Shaw) finally meets Kilroy at the very end of the song, Kilroy unmasks and yells “I’m Kilroy! Kilroy!”, ending the song.

Lindsey Buckingham – ‘Holiday Road’ from the ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’ Soundtrack

When it comes to movie soundtracks, the ’80s were the absolute best! Think of all the great songs that were included in movie soundtracks from the ’80s. Here’s just a few of our favorites:

  • Don’t You (Forget About Me) from The Breakfast Club
  • Eye of the Tiger from Rocky III
  • Purple Rain from Purple Rain
  • Footloose from Footloose

And, one of our all time favorite songs from an ’80s movie soundtrack is this one, Holiday Road from Lindsey Buckingham. To me, this is a perfect example of how synonymous a song and movie can become. The moment you hear the beginning of this song, you immediately think of the Griswold’s heading out for their family vacation in the Wagon Queen Family Truckster!
