Rick Springfield – ‘Jessie’s Girl’ 40th Anniversary Live

May 25, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of his album Working Class Dog, ageless Rick Springfield recorded a live version of Jessie’s Girl at his home. Rick looks and sounds amazing, and it’s almost unbelievable that he’s 72 years old. He looks like he’s still in his 40s!!!

Jessie’s Girl was a number one hit on the Hot 100 chart for Springfield in 1981, and in 2018 Billboard ranked it number 186 on it’s greatest songs of all time.

Enjoy this look at Rick Springfield performing Jessie’s Girl live at his home as well as his original music video for Jessie’s Girl from 1981!

Also, we want to give a shoutout to Youtube user Delaney for this comment on Springfield’s Jessie’s Girl music video on YouTube. Awesome Delaney!

In 1980, The Eagles released an album titled Eagles Live, and it contained one of our favorite songs of all time. Seven Bridges Road is an amazing song that was written by musician Steve Young for his 1969 Rock Salt & Nails & Seven Bridges Road album. However, The Eagles version is the most remembered version of the song, and it’s certainly one of the greatest cover songs of all time!

Enjoy this look back at archived footage of The Eagles rehearsing Seven Bridges Road before a concert as well as the band performing the song live in concert, and in case you’ve never heard the original version, enjoy a live performance of the song by Steve Young in 1985!

Relive Kirk Gibson’s Historic Home Run to Win Game One for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 1988 World Series

May 15, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

The 1988 World Series featured the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. the Oakland A’s. The Oakland A’s were heavily favored over the Dodgers, but the Dodgers upset the A’s and won the best-of-seven series in five games. The MVP of the series was Dodgers Cy Young winner, Orel Hershiser, who shut out the A’s in Game two of the series, and pitched a two-run, complete game in the Game five victory.

However, the most remembered moment from this series (as well as any in history) was when Kirk Gibson came in to pinch-hit in the bottom of the 9th inning with the Dodgers down 4-3 and with two outs in the inning. It was a brave move by Dodger skipper Tommy Lasorda as Gibson had a bad left hamstring, and a swollen right knee and wouldn’t play in another game in the series. Gibson was at the plate for six full minutes, and with a full count, he miraculously launched a walk-off home run into the left field bleachers to secure the game one win for the Dodgers. This is one of those moments that every baseball fan will always remember.

Enjoy this look back at Kirk Gibson’s historic walk-off home run to win game one of the 1988 World Series!

Metallica Performing ‘One’ Live at the 1989 Grammy Awards and then Losing the Heavy Metal Award to Jethro Tull

May 15, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

In 1989, Metallica were one of the most popular heavy metal bands on the planet, and they were the heavy favorites to win the first ever Grammy award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental. During the show, Metallica performed their hit song One, and it was a foregone conclusion they were going to win the award, right?

Wrong! In one of the most infamous moments in Grammy history, Alice Cooper and Lita Ford came to introduce the nominees for the award: Metallica, AC/DC, Iggy Pop, Jane’s Addiction, and Jethro Tull. And the award goes to… Jethro Tull! Needless to say, this was not a popular win for the category to say the least. The following year in 1990, Metallica won a Grammy for One, but the 1989 Grammys will always be remembered as the year a heavy metal flute band won the Grammy award.

Enjoy this look back at Metallica performing One live during the 1989 Grammys as well as a look at the infamous moment when Jethro Tull were announced as the winners. Oh, and just for fun, here’s a look at the Grammy winning “heavy metal” band performing their song Farm on the Freeway live in 1988. Farm on the Freeway was a number seven hit on the Mainstream Rock charts from Jethro Tull’s 1987 album Crest of a Knave, which was actually the album the Grammy was for. No disrespect to Jethro Tull, but this is definitely not a heavy metal song, but if you love the flute, you’re gonna love it!

The Bandit is Wasted Scene from Smokey and the Bandit II from 1980

May 3, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Smokey and the Bandit II was released in 1980 as the sequel to 1977’s Smokey and the Bandit, one of the funniest movies of all time. In this scene from the sequel, Bo, played by Burt Reynolds, is wasted but just has to hold it together for five minutes so he and Cledus, played by Jerry Reed, can close a deal with the Burdette brothers, Big and Little Enos.

Burt nailed this scene, and it’s one of our favorite scenes from the movie. Enjoy this hilarious look back at Bo and Cledus closing the deal with Big Enos and Little Enos in Smokey and the Bandit II from 1980, and for nostalgia sake, enjoy a look at one of our favorite scenes of all time from the original Smokey and the Bandit where Sheriff Buford T. Danzig Performing ‘Mother’ Live on the Jon Stewart Show

May 1, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

In 1988, Danzig released their self-titled debut album, and the first single released was Mother, which has become their signature song. Mother didn’t chart when it was originally released, but it was re-released in 1993, and it peaked at number 17 on the Mainstream Rock chart.

Glenn Danzig said this about the song, “I remember calling producer Rick Rubin in the middle of the night and telling him that I wrote an incredible song—probably the best song I’d ever written. It was the song I always wanted to write. The first time we played it, people went crazy. But I never wrote that song to make it a hit—I never wrote that way, and I still don’t. I write songs so that they say something and do something, and if people like them, great—and if they don’t, they don’t.”

Skid Row Has a New Lead Singer, and He’s Actually Pretty Darn Good

April 16, 2022 By the80sruled 1 Comment

Ever since Sebastian Bach left as Skid Row’s lead singer in 1996, they have struggled to find another front man with the charisma and pipes that Bach had. Johnny Solinger actually spent the longest time as Skid Row’s lead singer, fronting the band from 1999 to 2015. Sadly, Solinger passed away in 2021 from liver failure.

After Solinger, the band briefly replaced him with Tony Harnell from the Norwegian hard rock band TNT, but in 2016, they hired ZP Theart, a South African singer who was the original singer of the British power metal band DragonForce. Theart was with Skid Row from 2016 until March 23, 2022.

Enter Skid Row’s new lead singer Erik Gronwall. Who is Erik Gronwall? First and foremost, he was born in 1987, so he’s definitely not a retread ’80s or ’90s singer still hanging on. Gronwell, who is from Sweden, actually won the Swedish Idol reality TV show back in 2009. During his time on the show, he received standing ovations from the jury during his performances. In 2018, he portrayed Simon Zealotes in the NBC live television concert production of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar, in which he received Grammy nomination for in the Best Musical Theater Album category.

There will never be another Sebastian Bach! Bach is still kicking butt and is one of our all time favorite hard rock singers. We’re happy for Skid Row though. They seem to have found a lead singer who’s not trying to “be” Sebastian Bach, but rather is thrilled to “be” the lead singer of Skid Row, and he sounds pretty damn good.

Enjoy this look at Skid Row performing I Remember You, 18 and Life, and Piece of Me live with new lead singer Erik Gronwall, and as a bonus, check out Gronwall performing 18 and Life during his audition for Swedish Idol. It has to be pretty freaking cool to be the lead singer of your favorite band. Enjoy!

Tommy Lee Goes Shoe Shopping for White Boots for his Wedding to Heather Locklear

If you’re a Motley Crue fan, or just a fan of early ’80s celebrity videos, you’re going to love this short little video of Tommy Lee shopping for some white boots for his wedding the next day to Heather Locklear, or as he told the reporter, “Heather Locklear from Dynasty… Sammy Jo”. Priceless. What struck me the most from this short clip is how accommodating and nice Tommy was to the reporter and cameraman who were obviously intruding on his privacy. It’s also pretty funny to realize that he’s shopping for a pair of white boots from his favorite store to wear for his wedding, which is THE NEXT DAY! LOL

Well, as you can see from the photos below, the boots turned out great for the wedding but weren’t needed for the honeymoon!

The Grateful Dead – ‘Touch of Grey’ Music Video from 1987

February 20, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

The Grateful Dead formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California. They were known for their eclectic style and live performances which included lengthy instrumental jams as well as their loyal fanbase who were known as Deadheads who followed the band from show to show.

Throughout their career, The Grateful Dead were never known as a radio-friendly band, which explains why they only charted six songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during all their years. They rarely released a song as a single, but in 1987, they released the song Touch of Grey as the first single from their 1987 In the Dark album. With the help of an incredibly popular music video on MTV, Touch of Grey became their first and only top 40 hit on the Hot 100 chart, peaking at number nine. It also became their first and only number one hit on the Mainstream Rock chart. After the success of Touch of Grey on the Rock chart, four of their next six singles were top 40 hits on the Rock chart, with two top ten singles for Hell in a Bucket, peaking at number three in 1987, and Foolish Heart, peaking at number eight in 1989.

Enjoy this look back at The Grateful Dead’s music video for Touch of Grey from 1987 as well as their music videos for Hell in a Bucket and Foolish Heart!

The opening acts for the concert were the New Riders of the Purple Sage and the Blues Brothers. The Dead didn’t hit the stage until midnight, and they played for approximately five hours, and then had breakfast with the audience at dawn. Incredible!

South to Drop Off – North to Pickup – Classic Scene from Mr. Mom

Mr. Mom is one of our favorite, funny movies from the early ’80s. There were so many great scenes, but one of the best was when Jack “did it wrong” dropping the kids off at school.
