The Final Fight Between Buddy and Jerry in 1987’s ‘Three O’Clock High’

March 11, 2023 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Some scenes (and movies) from the ’80s are so cheesy, and but yet so good at the same time, and this is one of those scenes. In 1987’s Three O’ Clock High, Jerry, a nerdy high school newspaper reporter tries to introduce himself to Buddy, a tough new transfer student who does not like to be touched, but makes the mistake of touching his arm. Buddy tells Jerry that at 3 PM, they’re fighting outside the school.

In the scene below, Jerry and Buddy scare off, and as mentioned before, this scene is so cheesy, yet so good, and so ’80s. Enjoy!

What Happened to the Cast of ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ After 35 Years

March 11, 2023 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Photo via Nostalgia Hit

Can’t Buy Me Love was one of my favorite movies from the late ’80s, and Cindy Mancini was every ’80s boy’s crush. That’s what makes this then and now video about the cast of Can’t Buy Me Love so sad. The rest of the cast of the movie look great after 35 years, but sadly Amanda Peterson, who played Mancini, passed away way too soon in 2015 from an accidental drug overdose.

An autopsy to determine the cause of Peterson’s death was scheduled by the Weld County coroner for July 6 and the results of the autopsy and toxicology tests were released on September 2, 2015. The medical examiner determined that Peterson died of an accidental drug overdose. According to the coroner’s report, Peterson had undergone a hysterectomy shortly before her death and was prescribed Gabapentin for post-surgical pain management. She was taking morphine at the time of her death; according to the report, she obtained the drug from a friend a week before she died. The coroner’s report concluded Peterson experienced a “morphine effect” that triggered respiratory failure leading to her death. Peterson was later cremated.

Bands Reunited – Scandal

March 5, 2023 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Back in 2004, VH1’s Bands Reunited featured ’80s rockers Scandal. The premise of the show is the producers surprise each band member individually and ask them if they are willing to reunite with their original band members and perform a one night only show. Lucky for us, every one of the original members agreed to do the reunion, and the reunion show would also honor their original bass player, Ivan Elias, who passed away in 1995 from cancer.

This is a great episode, and the band performed Goodbye to You and The Warrior during the reunion show. They sounded great! If you were a fan of Scandal, you’ll love this episode. Sadly, two of the members who reunited for the one night show have since passed away. Sadly, keyboardist Benjy King died in 2012 as a result of complications from an accident, and drummer Frankie LaRocka died after undergoing heart surgery in 2005.

Now, watching this, it’s a tribute to all three members of Scandal who left us way too soon.

David Lee Roth on ‘The Late Show’ with Joan Rivers in 1986

March 5, 2023 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

In 1986, David Lee Roth appeared on The Late Show with Joan Rivers and talked about life on the road, what he wears when he’s at home by himself, and his love life. He also addresses his break-up with Van Halen. One of the my favorite parts of the interview was actually when Rivers asked him what his mother thought of his career, and he said, “I think she’s thinking pretty highly of it. I mean, you’ve gotta go for what you do the best, and you make the most of it.” A nice little life lesson from Diamond Dave.

Enjoy this look back at David Lee Roth on with Joan Rivers back in 1986!

Michael and Gertie Meet E.T. for the First Time

February 28, 2023 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Who doesn’t remember this iconic scene from 1982’s E.T.! It’s the first time Michael and Gertie meet E.T. According to People.com, Drew Barrymore, who was seven years old when she starred in the movie actually thought E.T. was alive. So much so, that Spielberg appointed two guys to keep E.T. alive and animated when Barrymore was around so whenever she came over to talk to him, he would react to her. Barrymore even asked the “wardrobe lady” as she called her if she could bring a scarf for E.T.’s neck “because he was gonna get cold.” Too cute!

Enjoy this look back at the moment that Michael and Gertie meet E.T. for the first time!

What a cool concept! In this episode of Bands Reunited, the producers of the show track down the members of The Motels one by one in an effort to reunite them for a one-night only reunion concert. It’s very entertaining, and the footage from the reunion concert is amazing. They sound as good as ever! I think you’re really going to enjoy this one!

Johnny Carson as Ronald Reagan on The Tonight Show Spoofing Abbott & Costello’s “Who’s On First” Routine

February 22, 2023 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Johnny Carson did a lot of different skits and impersonations, but his portrayal of Ronald Reagan was so good and so funny! This clip where Carson and actor Fred Holliday, who played Reagan’s chief of staff, recreate their version of Abbott & Costello’s “Who’s On First” routine is hilarious. In this skit, the conversation revolves around the premier of China at the time named Hu, Watt, Reagan’s then-Secretary of Interior, the Y (YMCA), and Yassir Arafat, the former Palestinian President. So funny!

And, just because, enjoy the famous “Who’s On First” skit from Abbott & Costello as well!

Mr. Warmth Don Rickles on The Tonight Show in 1984

February 7, 2023 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Throughout the history of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, whenever Don Rickles appeared on the show, Johnny basically just sat back let him go. It was a brilliant move by a host. Every now and then, Johnny would ask Don a question, but usually, Rickles just came out, sat down and started going, and when he was on, nobody was funnier. One of Johnny’s best skills was just letting his guests be as funny as they wanted and he didn’t interrupt. He did the same when Jonathan Winters or Robin Williams appeared on the show. Just bring them out and start laughing!

Enjoy this look back to 1984 when Mr. Warmth himself, Don Rickles appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson!

We can’t get enough of Don Rickles on The Tonight Show, so we thought we’d share some more of Rickles on The Tonight Show throughout the years. Enjoy!

Sixteen Candles Then and Now (1984 – 2023)

February 5, 2023 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Photo via Nostalgia Hit on YouTube

Sixteen Candles is one of the most memorable movies of the ’80s and was written by John Hughes, who also made his directorial debut with the film. During the ’80s, Hughes went on to write and direct The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, She’s Having a Baby, and Uncle Buck.

Sixteen Candles was Molly Ringwald’s breakout role when she played Samantha Baker, a girl whose 16th birthday is forgotten by her family. Anthony Michael Hall’s stardom also skyrocketed after Sixteen Candles, although he was a recognizable face having appeared as Rusty Griswold in National Lampoon’s Vacation, which was released a year before Sixteen Candles in 1983.

Gilligan’s Island Reunion from 1988 Featuring the Entire Cast

January 30, 2023 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

If you’re a fan of the ’80s, then there’s a good chance you were born in the late ’60s or early ’70s, and like me, you were a huge fan of the TV show Gilligan’s Island. I remember watching reruns of Gilligan’s Island after school in the ’70s. I loved this show, and this reunion show from 1988 featured the entire cast as well as the producer Sherwood Schwartz. It’s rare this day and age if more than one or two original cast members show up for a TV reunion show, which is why this video is so cool. It’s a real blessing to see the entire cast on the show talking about how much the show meant to them.

So, sit back and enjoy this look back to 1988 at this Gilligan’s Island reunion show featuring the entire cast!

And, who doesn’t remember this gem of a song:

Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
Aboard this tiny ship.

The mate was a mighty sailin’ man,
The Skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour,
A three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
the tiny ship was tossed.
If not for the courage of the fearless crew,
The Minnow would be lost,
The Minnow would be lost.

The ship set ground on the shore of this
Uncharted desert isle
With Gilligan,
The Skipper too,
The Millionaire and his Wife,
The Movie Star,
The Professor and Mary Ann,
Here on Gilligan’s Isle.

(Closing Credits)
Now, this is the tale of our castaways,
They’re here for a long, long time.
They’ll have to make the best of things,
It’s an uphill climb.

The first mate and his Skipper too
Will do their very best
To make the others comfortable
In their tropic island nest.

No phone, no lights, no motor car,
not a single luxury,
Like Robinson Crusoe,
It’s primitive as can be.

So join us here each week my friends,
You’re sure to get a smile,
From seven stranded castaways
Here on Gilligan’s Isle!

Styx – ‘Babe’ Live from 1980

January 17, 2023 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

In September of 1979, Styx released Babe as the lead single from their album Cornerstone. Babe would become their first and only number one song on the Hot 100 chart. That seems a travesty considering all the great songs Styx released over the years like Come Sail Away, The Best of Times, Too Much Time on My Hands, Mr. Roboto, Don’t Let It End, and Show Me the Way (All of these songs were top ten hits, but none made it to number one.) Babe finished at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 Year-end chart for 1980.

Lead singer Dennis DeYoung wrote Babe as a birthday present for his wife Suzanne, and it wasn’t intended to be a Styx track, but guitarists J.Y. Young and Tommy Shaw convinced DeYoung to put the song on Cornerstone. Lucky for Styx he did as it has become one of their biggest hits, and one of the best love songs of the last 40 years.

Enjoy this look back at Styx performing Babe live in 1980!

Just for fun, here’s a look at videos of all the aforementioned Styx top ten songs. It’s still hard to believe none of these songs made it to the top. They’re all great songs!

The Karate Kid and Karate Kid II both made over $130 million as the box office, and both were among the highest grossing films of the year when they were released. One of my favorite scenes from Karate Kid II was when Chozen challenges Daniel to break through six sheets of ice. The first single released from Street Talk was Oh Sherrie, which peaked at number three on the Hot 100 chart and number one on the Mainstream Rock chart. He followed it up with three more singles that were moderate hits on Hot 100 before scoring his third top 20 hit on the Hot 100 chart with the fifth and last single, Foolish Heart, from Street Talk. Foolish Heart peaked at number 18 on the Hot 100 chart and number two on the AC chart. It remains his highest charting single on the AC chart.

1984 was a heck of a year for ’80s music lovers! Prince was in his prime. Footloose and Ghostbusters were both awesome movies as well as awesome songs. Van Halen was jumping up the charts with iconic songs and music videos from their aptly titled 1984 album, and Lionel Richie was saying hello to us all.

In 1984, I was 14 years old, and I spent hours every day either riding my bike with my Sony Walkman listening to cassette tapes from my favorite artists or sitting in front of my TV watching MTV as long as my parents would let me. Oh to be a teenager in the ’80s again…

In honor of 1984, here’s a look back at videos featuring the top ten year-end Hot 100 songs of 1984 as well as a few more videos of some of my favorite songs of 1984 that didn’t make the top ten!

#6: Van Halen – Jump

#7: Lionel Richie – Hello

The top ten songs were great, but there were some other songs I loved that didn’t make the top ten but certainly deserve a mention. Here’s a look at a few of our favorites!
