One of our favorite movies of the last 25 years is 2001’s Rock Star starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston. Our favorite scene is when Wahlberg is auditioning for the lead singer role and hears the words “So, ya want the gig, then?” Priceless!

‘Alone Again’ was Dokken’s first top 20 rock single when it peaked at #20 on the Billboard rock charts in 1984. It was also their first single on the Hot 100 charts peaking at #64. 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Joan Jett
We’re huge fans of Joan Jett, and there are some things on this list we didn’t know. What about you? Did you know these ten things about Joan Jett?
Katrina & The Waves – ‘Walking On Sunshine’ Music Video
‘Walking on Sunshine’ was a top ten hit for Katrina and the Waves back in 1985. The song has been kept alive for years by advertisers who have used the song in their ads. Brilliantly, Katrina and the Waves kept the publishing rights and the royalties that usually go to the songwriter, and reportedly, the song has earned over $1 million per year for the ten years ending in 2010.
And, it continues to earn royalties as it can still be heard on the radio and in commercials today. Advertisers typically pay between $150,000 – $200,000 per year to use the song. Now that is the way to capitalize on your one big hit!
Eurythmics – ‘Here Comes The Rain Again’ Music Video
The Eurythmics music video for ‘Here Comes The Rain Again’, a top five hit from 1984!

The Cult’s music video for ‘Love Removal Machine’, the first single from their 1987 ‘Electric’ album. This song rocks!
Cinderella – ‘The Last Mile’ Music Video
Cinderella’s 1988 ‘Long Cold Winter’ album is one of the best hard rock albums of the entire decade of the 80s (in our honest opinion)! The album spawned four awesome singles including ‘Gypsy Road’, ‘Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)’, ‘Coming Home’ and this one, ‘The Last Mile’.
For some unknown reason, they never achieved the chart success they should have with ‘The Last Mile’ peaking at number 18 on the rock charts. Even more baffling is their rock ballad, ‘Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)’, which is one of the greatest songs from the 80s didn’t even make it into the top 10 on the Hot 100 charts, peaking at #12.
We’re here to give them the recognition they deserve because in our opinion, they’re one of the best rock bands of the 80s and 90s!
Def Leppard – ‘Hello America’ Videos from 1980
If you’re a fan of good ole rock n’ roll, then Def Leppard’s 1980 On Through the Night album has to be one of your favorites. Hello America was the third single released from the album, and it was their first top 50 hit in the UK! They would score their first number one rock hits in America just three short years later with Photograph and Rock of Ages!

Chicago released their first single all the way back in July 1969, and 20 years later, they scored their largest selling single of all time with 1989’s ‘Look Away’. ‘Look Away’ was the number one song on the 1989 year-end Billboard Hot 100 chart even though it never held the #1 spot on the charts in 1989. It had hit number one for two weeks from December 4-17, 1988.
This was also Chicago’s only number one single following Peter Cetera’s departure from the band in 1985.
Salt-N-Pepa – ‘Push It’ Official Music Video

“Push It” Lyrics:
Ah, push it
Ah, push it
Oooh, baby, baby
Baby, baby
Oooh, baby, baby
Baby, baby
Get up on this!
Ow! Baby!
Salt and Pepa’s here!
(Now wait a minute, y’all
This dance ain’t for everybody
Only the sexy people
So all you fly mothers, get on out there and dance
Dance, I said!)
Salt and Pepa’s here, and we’re in effect
Want you to push it, babe
Coolin’ by day then at night working up a sweat
C’mon girls, let’s go show the guys that we know
How to become number one in a hot party show
Now push it
Ah, push it – push it good
Ah, push it – push it real good
Ah, push it – push it good
Ah, push it – p-push it real good
Hey! Ow!
Push it good!
Oooh, baby, baby
Baby, baby
Oooh, baby, baby
Baby, baby
Push it good
Push it real good
Ah, push it
Ah, push it
Yo, yo, yo, yo, baby-pop
Yeah, you come here, gimme a kiss
Better make it fast or else I’m gonna get pissed
Can’t you hear the music’s pumpin’ hard like I wish you would?
Now push it
Push it good
Push it real good
Push it good
P-push it real good
Ah, push it
Get up on this!
Boy, you really got me going
You got me so I don’t know what I’m doing
Ah, push it

Huey Lewis and the News – ‘The Power Of Love’ – Number One Song From 1985
‘The Power of Love’ was Huey Lewis and the News‘ first number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It was number one on the charts for two weeks from August 18-31, 1985. It also hit number one on the Billboard Rock charts and remains one of their most remembered songs from the 80s!
Tommy Tutone – ‘867-5309/Jenny’ – Official Music Video
Tommy Tutone is and will forever be remembered for his number one rock hit ‘867-5309/Jenny’ from 1981. It was the first single from his 1981 album ‘Tommy Tutone 2’.
For years, Tutone maintained that the number was real and it was a girl he knew named Jenny. He used to say he wrote the number on a bathroom wall and he and Jenny laughed about it for years. However, this was actually not true.
In June 2004, co-writer Alex call talked about the true origins of the song during an interview with Songfacts:
Despite all the mythology to the contrary, I actually just came up with the ‘Jenny,’ and the telephone number and the music and all that just sitting in my backyard. There was no Jenny. I don’t know where the number came from, I was just trying to write a 4-chord Rock song and it just kind of came out. This was back in 1981 when I wrote it, and I had at the time a little squirrel-powered 4-track in this industrial yard in California, and I went up there and made a tape of it. I had the guitar lick, I had the name and number, but I didn’t know what the song was about. This buddy of mine, Jim Keller, who’s the co-writer, was the lead guitar player in Tommy Tutone. He stopped by that afternoon and he said, ‘Al, it’s a girl’s number on a bathroom wall,’ and we had a good laugh. I said, ‘That’s exactly right, that’s exactly what it is.’
Tommy Tutone’s been using the story for years that there was a Jenny and she ran a recording studio and so forth. It makes a better story but it’s not true. That sounds a lot better than I made it up under a plum tree in my backyard.
I had the thing recorded. I had the name and number, and they were in the same spots, ‘Jenny… 867-5309.’ I had all that going, but I had a blind spot in the creative process, I didn’t realize it would be a girl’s number on a bathroom wall. When Jim showed up, we wrote the verses in 15 or 20 minutes, they were just obvious. It was just a fun thing, we never thought it would get cut. In fact, even after Tommy Tutone made the record and ‘867-5309’ got on the air, it really didn’t have a lot of promotion to begin with, but it was one of those songs that got a lot of requests and stayed on the charts. It was on the charts for 40 weeks.
I’ve met a few Jennys who’ve said, “Oh, you’re the guy who ruined my high school years.” But for the most part, Jennys are happy to have the song.
