During the ’70s and early ’80s, The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast specials were one of the most popular shows on television. They were also one of the funniest! Howard Stern First Appearance on Late Night with David Letterman in 1984

August 13, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Howard Stern made his first appearance on Late Night with David Letterman on May 21, 1984, and then came back a few more times during ’84. As you can see from Stern’s attire, this was before he looked and dressed like a rock star. But looks aside, Stern was the same then as he is now. He’s brutally honest and tells it like he sees it. Dave on the other hand is very private and never shared much personal information, but somehow the two of them meshed well together. In fact, Stern was a guest on Letterman many times throughout his career, and he and Dave became friends. They did have a falling out years later, but they mended their friendship before Dave’s retirement.

Field of Dreams – The Final Scene – Playing Catch with Dad

August 12, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

“If you build it, he will come.”

Field of Dreams was a 1989 fantasy baseball movie that starred Kevin Costner as a farmer who builds a baseball field in his cornfield, which attracts the ghosts of baseball legends like Shoeless Joe Jackson, played by Ray Liotta and the Chicago Black Sox. Costner’s character, Ray Kinsella was walking through his cornfield one night when he hears a voice whispering to him, “If you build it, he will come.” Ray builds the field, and at the very end of the movie, Ray’s father comes to the field. And, in an emotional scene, Ray and his dad play catch. At face value, it seems pretty corny, but there wasn’t a dry eye in the theater when this movie ended back in the day.

Enjoy the final scene in Field of Dreams where Ray and his dad John play catch on the field that Ray built!

Def Leppard – ‘Armageddon It’ Music Video from 1988

August 9, 2021 By the80sruled 1 Comment

Def Leppard’s 1987 Hysteria album produced so many great songs! Every single released from the album was a top 25 hit on the Mainstream Rock charts, and four out of seven of the singles were top ten hits on the Hot 100 charts, including Love Bites, which was their first number one song on the Hot 100 charts.

Armageddon It was the sixth single released from the album in the US, and it was a huge hit on both the rock and Hot 100 charts peaking at number three on both in 1988. The music video for Armageddon It was similar to the video for Pour Some Sugar On Me in that it was shot during one of their live arena concerts at the McNichols Arena in Denver, CO.

Relive The Final Scene in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles

August 8, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is an ’80s classic! It starred Steve Martin as Neal Page, an intense marketing executive, and the late John Candy as Del Griffith, a sweet, yet annoying shower curtain ring salesman. The film follows the two of them for three days as Del tries to get back to see his family in time for Thanksgiving. There are so many great scenes in the movie, but the most heart-wrenching and revealing scene was at the end of the movie when Neal realizes that Del is homeless, alone for the holidays, and his wife has been dead for over eight years. Neal invites Del to spend the holiday with his family, and it’s one of the most emotional scenes you’ll ever see in a comedy.

‘This Is Spinal Tap’ – “These go to eleven” Scene

August 7, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

This is Spinal Tap was a 1984 mockumentary film that starred Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer as members of the fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap. It was director Rob Reiner’s directorial debut. While the movie only made about $4.7 million at the box office, it amassed a cult following after it was released on VHS.

According to Wikipedia, “In 2002, it was deemed ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’ by the Library of Congress, and was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry. In 2016, film critic and author Jeremy Arnold chose it as one of the ’52 Must-See Movies’, describing it as “one of the single most influential movies of the past thirty-five years” and arguing that it “effectively launched a new genre—the mockumentary”.

‘The Natural’ – The Home Run Scene

The Natural was a 1984 movie starring Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Kim Basinger, and Robert Duvall. The film followed the baseball career of Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford), a “natural”. Our favorite scene in the movie, and one of the greatest scenes in any sports movie, is this one where Roy hits his famous home run that shatters the lights in the park. This scene takes me back to the movie theater in 1984 when I literally was on the edge of my seat watching this scene. It still gives me chills to this day.
