Full Metal Jacket – The Virgin Mary Scene

January 29, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Full Metal Jacket was released in the United States on June 26, 1987 and grossed over $120 million worldwide. The film was based on the 1979 novel The Short-Timers and follows a platoon of United States Marines through their boot camp training in Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina.

In this scene from the movie, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, played by Lee Ermey asks Private J.T. “Joker” Davis, played by Matthew Modine, if he believes in the Virgin Mary. Needless to say, Sergeant Hartman did not like his answer at the beginning, but once Joker stands up for himself, the Gunny changes his mind.

The music video for Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s song Relax is an ’80s classic. It was directed by Paul Morley and features the band performing the song in a variety of settings, including a nightclub, a beach, and a city street. The video is known for its colorful visuals and its sexually suggestive content.

The video begins with a shot of the band performing the song in a nightclub. The band is dressed in leather and latex, and they are surrounded by dancers. The video then cuts to a shot of the band performing the song on a beach. The band is dressed in swimsuits, and they are surrounded by sunbathers. Coming to America – The Washing Lettuce Scene with Louie Anderson, Eddie Murphy, and Arsenio Hall

January 28, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Coming to America is a 1988 American romantic comedy film directed by John Landis and starring Eddie Murphy as Prince Akeem Joffer, the crown prince of Zamunda, who travels to the United States to find a woman he can marry. It is the first installment in the Coming to America franchise.

The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $300 million worldwide against a production budget of $35 million. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Costume Design and Best Makeup.

The film follows Prince Akeem as he travels to the United States to find a woman he can marry. He disguises himself as a poor man and works at a fast food restaurant. He meets Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley), the daughter of the owner of the restaurant, and they fall in love. However, Akeem’s identity is revealed and he is forced to return to Zamunda.

Coming to America is one of my all time favorite movies from any decade! There are so many hilarious scenes in the movie, but one of my favorite scenes is when the late Louie Anderson’s character gives Akeem and Semmi, played by Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall, a pep talk about how he started on clean up, but now he’s washing lettuce, and soon will be on fries. Then, the grill, and in a year or two, he’ll make assistant manager, and that’s when the big bucks start rolling in.

Ralph Macchio Screen Tests for ABC with Phil Hartman in 1980

January 25, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

How cool is this? We found this video from icmroadkill on YouTube of Ralph Macchio at 18 doing a screen test for a couple of ABC shows including Eight is Enough and a Dracula series. If you thought Macchio looked young for his age in The Karate Kid, wait until you see this video. He’s 18, but could easily pass for 14 or 15 if he wanted to.

This is so cool to see Macchio before he was a household name. Oh, and the voice you hear reading with Macchio is Phil Hartman, whose main movie roles at the time were as an Assistant on the 1978 movie Stunt Rock, and as “Man at airport with gun” in 1980’s The Gong Show Movie, and “Actor being filmed in the background” in 1980’s Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie.

Clint Eastwood in Sudden Impact – Nobody Puts Ketchup on a Hot Dog Scene

There are so many great scenes in all of Clint Eastwood’s Dirty Harry series of movies. One of favorite scenes from 1983’s Sudden Impact is where Harry tells a fellow cop what’s really bothering him. “You know what really bothers me! It’s watching you stuff your face with those hot dogs. Nobody… I mean nobody puts ketchup on a hot dog!”

It’s classic Dirty Harry, and of course nobody will ever forget our other favorite scene from this movie where Harry utters his famous line in a coffee shop, “Go ahead… make my day!”

Remembering Meat Loaf (September 27, 1947 – January 20, 2022)

January 21, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

We lost one of the most creative and beautiful artists of our time when Marvin Lee Aday, known to the world as Meat Loaf, passed away at his home on January 20, 2022.

Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell Triology, Bat Out of Hell, Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell, and Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster is Loose have sold over 65 million albums worldwide. One of Meat Loaf’s greatest hits, 1978’s Paradise by the Dashboard Light, was the first song I remember from him, and the music video was a staple on MTV during the early ’80s. At the time, the music video was the longest music video available at the time. Meat Loaf re-released Paradise by the Dashboard Light with Ellen Foley in 1988 and again in 1993. That shows you just how powerful and popular this song was with Meat Loaf’s fans.

One other song and music video that we remember so fondly from Meat Loaf was 1993’s I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That). This was Meat Loaf’s biggest hit of his career. It topped almost every music chart in the world including the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Lastly, who can forget Meat Loaf as Eddie in 1975’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Eddie burst through the wall on his motorcyle and launched into Hot Patootie – Bless My Soul.

In Meat Loaf’s honor, enjoy this look back at his iconic music videos for both Paradise by the Dashboard Light and I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That) as well as his iconic performance of Hot Patootie – Bless My Soul in the Rocky Horror Picture Show!

RIP Meat Loaf… You will be deeply missed by so many fans around the world, but your music will live on forever.

The Karate Kid leave the boy alone scene

The Karate Kid had a lot of great scenes, but one of the best wasn’t filled with action, but with words. Robin Williams’ Funniest Interview Ever on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in 1987

Listen to the Real Voice of Darth Vader

January 17, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Wow! I had never heard Darth Vader’s “real voice” until now. English bodybuilder and character actor David Prowse played the character of Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy movies, and he voiced the dialogue during filming of the movies. George Lucas wanted a “darker voice” for Vader, so he brought in James Earl Jones to be the voice of Vader.

It’s pretty funny to hear Prowse as Vader in these Star Wars scenes. If they had left Prowse’s voice as Vader in the first movie, there might not have been a trilogy. Enjoy this look back at Darth Vader’s original voice in Star Wars!

The live performance below of Anytime from Osaka, Japan in 1980 is so good! Original keyboardist Gregg Rolie dueted with Steve Perry on Anytime. Rolie was an original member of Santana and sang lead vocals on their iconic hit Black Magic Woman. In 1973, Rolie joined a new band with ex-Santana guitarist Neal Schon. This band became Journey, and he was the keyboardist for the band’s first six albums. The Cast of Diff-rent Strokes – How They Changed over the Years

January 16, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Photo via Good Old Days on YouTube

If you grew up as a kid in the late ’70s and early ’80s, you more than likely were a fan of the TV sitcom Diff’rent Strokes. Who didn’t look at their friends and say, “What’chu talkin’ ’bout Willis?” Diff’rent Strokes aired on NBC from November 3, 1978 to May 4, 1985, and on ABC from September 27, 1985 to March 7, 1986. The series focused on two African-American boys from Harlem who are taken in by a rich white Park Avenue businessman, for whom their deceased mother had worked for.

The main cast of Diff’rent Strokes consisted of:

Conrad Bain as Phillip Drummond
Gary Coleman as Arnold Jackson
Todd Bridges as Willis Jackson
Dana Plato as Kimberly Drummond (1978–84, 1985–86 recurring)
Charlotte Rae as Edna Garrett (1978–79)
Mary Jo Catlett as Pearl Gallagher (1982–86)
Danny Cooksey as Sam McKinney (1984–86)
Dixie Carter as Maggie McKinney Drummond #1 (1984–85)
Mary Ann Mobley as Maggie McKinney Drummond #2 (1985–86) and as Ms. Osbourne

Sadly, both Gary Coleman and Dana Plato passed away way too soon. Coleman, who had battled health problems since childhood caused by congenital kidney disease, passed away on May 28, 2010 from complications from an injury he received from falling and hitting his head after suffering a seizure.

Plato’s life after the show ended was nothing short of tragic. Her life spiraled out of control due to drugs and alcohol, and she never recovered. Sadly, she took her own life in 1999 at the young age of 34. Horribly, her son Tyler committed suicide in 2010.

Todd Bridges, who played Arnold’s older brother Willis was the first of the three to see his life falling off the rails when he was arrested and charged with the attempted murder of a drug dealer at a crack house in South Central L.A. in 1988. He was acquitted for this charge in November, 1989. However, in the early ’90s, Bridges became sober, and has been touring schools around the United States ever since discussing the dangers of drug use.

Family Ties is one of the most beloved sitcoms in TV history. It ran from 1982 until 1989 and reflected the move in the US from the cultural liberalism of the ’60s and ’70s to the conservatism of the ’80s. Fox, and his ex-hippie parents, Steven and Elyse Keaton, played by Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter-Birney.

The series had many notable guest stars throughout the years like River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Christina Applegate, and Julia Luis-Dreyfus.

The main and recurring cast members of Family Ties were:

  • Michael J. Fox
