The Cast of The Breakfast Club Then and Now (1985 – 2021)

January 6, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

The Breakfast Club was released in 1985. It was written, directed, and produced by John Hughes, who also directed, wrote, and/or produced some of the greatest movies of the ’80s including Mr. Mom, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Sixteen Candles, European Vacation, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Some Kind of Wonderful, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, She’s Having A Baby, The Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. In the ’90s, he also wrote and produced the Home Alone movie series. It’s safe to say that if John Hughes was involved with a movie in the ’80s and ’90’s, it was going to be a hit.

The Breakfast Club starred five members of the Brat Pack, Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy as teenagers from different cliques in a high school who spend a Saturday in detention with their principal played by Paul Gleason.

Dire Straits – ‘Money For Nothing’ Music Video from 1985

January 4, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

It may not seem like much now, but in 1985, Dire Straits’ music video for Money For Nothing was the bomb! It was one of the first music videos to use computer-animated human characters, and it was considered ground-breaking at the time of its release.

Reportedly, lead singer Mark Knopfler was very anti-videos and did not like the concept for the video. However, MTV loved the song, but would not play it if it was just a video of Knopfler standing there singing and playing guitar. Luckily, Knopfler’s girlfriend at the time loved the idea for the video. She was present when they were pitching the video idea to Knopfler in Budapest, and she said, “There aren’t enough interesting videos on MTV, and that sounds like a great idea.” Knopfler supposedly didn’t say anything, but he didn’t stop the production of the video either.

Both the song and the music video were huge hits with the song topping the Hot 100 charts and the music video winning Video of the Year and Best Group Video.

Enjoy this look back at Dire Straits’ ground-breaking music video for Money For Nothing from 1985!

Better Off Dead starred John Cusack as a teenager whose girlfriend breaks up with him shortly before Christmas, and he decides he’d be better off dead. He makes several half-hearted attempts at suicide, with all of them failing comically. Throughout the movie, the paperboy keeps popping up asking for his $2.

When it comes to great movies from the ’80s, The Goonies is definitely on our top 20 list! One of the reasons why we love this movie so much is because of Chunk. How can you not love chubby little Chunk? It cracks me up every time I see him do the Truffle Shuffle, and one of the funniest parts of the entire movie is when the Fratellis’ capture Chunk and tell him to spill his guts and tell them everything!

Sudden Impact was the fourth movie in the Dirty Harry series. It was released to theaters on December 9, 1983. In Sudden Impact, Dirty Harry is famous for uttering “Go ahead, make my day!” That is one of our all time favorite scenes from any movie. Another great scene from Sudden Impact is this one where Harry confronts Threlkis, a powerful crime lord and tells him a story that quite literally gives Threlkis a heart-attack. It’s classic Dirty Harry!

Road House Fight Scene – Introducing Wade Garrett

January 4, 2022 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

Road House is one of our favorite movies from the ’80s! The entire movie is full of awesome scenes, but our absolute favorite scene is when Wade Garrett walks into the Double Deuce for the first time and asks if a skinny little runt named Dalton works there. He then walks out onto the back loading dock where Dalton is in a fight with Brad Wesley’s thugs. Swayze and Elliott are perfect as Dalton and Garrett as they quickly dispatch Wesley’s boys!

Enjoy this look back at the first time Wade Garrett appeared in Road House during the fight scene on the loading docks at the Double Deuce!

Rock & Roll Road Trip with Sammy Hagar Featuring Guns N’ Roses’ Bassist Duff McKagan Sharing Emotional Moments on Tour

December 30, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

I think you’re gonna like this short little video from AXS TV’s Rock & Roll Road Trip with Sammy Hagar. In this clip, Guns N’ Roses’ bassist Duff McKagan tells Sammy about one of the most emotional moments he’s had out on tour.

What I love about this video is both Duff and Sammy talk about how they always look out in the crowd and see people and wonder, “What’s that guy or girl’s story?” Duff tells a story about a dad and his daughter who he keeps seeing on the front row at their concerts, and he sees them on the streets in New Orleans and asks them why they’ve been at every show. It was an emotional moment to hear the dad’s answer.

Rush – ‘Limelight’ Music Video from 1981

December 30, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

In 1981, Canadian rockers Rush released one of the best rock albums of the last 40 years with Moving Pictures. The entire album is awesome, and two of our favorite Rush songs were on this album. Tom Sawyer, which is probably Rush’s most popular song, and Limelight, the first single released from the album. Limelight was Rush’s first top five rock single in the US when it peaked at number four on the Mainstream Rock charts in 1981. It was also their first top 20 hit on the Canadian charts, peaking at number 18.

Judge Smails’ Winter Rules in Golf Scene from Caddyshack

December 30, 2021 By the80sruled Leave a Comment

There are so many things going on in this one scene from the golf course with Judge Smails in Caddyshack. The main scene itself is hilarious with Judge Smails continuously kicking his ball out of the rough until Danny suggests, “Why don’t you improve your lie a little sir,” and Smails comments, “Yes, yes, winter rules.”

What’s even funnier is in the background the entire time, Smails’ grandson Spalding is cussing and hacking up the course. Finally, there’s Rodney Dangerfield’s character, Al Czervik, who tees it up and yells “Fore” right as his ball hits Judge Smails square in the cojones, and comments, “I should’ve yelled two!”.

Eye of the Tiger from the Rocky III soundtrack was their first and only number one hit on the Hot 100 charts in 1982, and Burning Heart from the 1985 Rocky IV soundtrack peaked at number two on the Hot 100 charts. Judas Priest – ‘Breaking The Law’ Then and Now (1980 and 2021)

In 1980, Judas Priest released their iconic British Steel album, and the album produced two of Priest’s most popular songs with Living After Midnight and Breaking The Law. Both songs peaked at number 12 on the UK charts, and have since become staples at Judas Priest’s live shows. It is incomprehensible that they are not in the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame yet. They were nominated for the class of 2020, but were not elected. If ever there was a band that deserved to be in the ROCK n’ Roll Hall of Fame, it’s Judas Priest. They’ve been rocking the stage for over 40 years and still sound as good as ever as evidenced in the video below from 2021.

Two of our favorite scenes from the movie are when Judge Smails is picking out a hat in the pro shop when Al walks in and comments, “Oh, this is the worst-looking hat I ever saw. What, when you buy a hat like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh? Oh, it looks good on you though”, and shortly thereafter, the scene where Al walks up on Smails about to tee off and bets Smails 100 bucks he’ll slice it into the woods.
