Who can forget Phoebe Cates coming out of the pool in her red bikini in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, one of the early ’80s best movies. Rolling Stone called his scene, “the most memorable bikini-drop in cinema history.” Cates also starred in Gremlins and Gremlins 2: The New Batch, as well as some other less notable ’80s movies.
She retired from acting in 1994 to spend more time with her husband, actor Kevin Kline, and their two children, Owen and Greta. She did come out of retirement in 2001 to appear in the movie, The Anniversary Party, as a favor to her best friend and former co-star in Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Jennifer Jason Leigh, who directed the movie.
So, where is Phoebe Cates now? According to the latest issue of Star Magazine, Cates and Kline have now been married for 31 years, which is wonderful considering how most celebrity marriages last about 31 weeks! These days, Cates owns a boutique in New York City called Blue Tree, which she opened in 2005. Blue Tree offers eclectic home goods and high-end clothing personally curated by Cates herself.
The New York Times referred to the store as “a version of Elizabeth Street for the Carnegie Hill crowd, a little oasis of downtown aesthetic at Ladies Who Lunch prices,” and said that “the celebrity boutique is a way for famous people to admit the civilian into their universe; it is a presentation of themselves, their likes and desires, their preferences—and does not require them to step in front of a camera.” Cates stated “I always wanted to have a general store.” Cates also said that some of her customers tell her that she looks like Phoebe Cates, and that she responds to them by saying “I get that a lot.”via Wikipedia
For us, she’ll always be remembered as Linda Barrett, the most beautiful woman we had ever seen coming out of a pool in a red bikini!
