Seven Great Album Covers from the ’80s

July 5, 2019 By the80sruled 1 Comment

U2 – War (1983)

U2’s ‘War’ album cover is one of the greatest album covers of all time in our opinion. Rather than show images of violence and destruction from a war, U2 chose to feature a little boy with an intense stare that conveys both anger and confusion. Visually, it is a brilliant image for this album, as it shows the human side of ‘War’.

The Beastie Boys – Licensed to Ill (1986)

The Beastie Boys’ 1986 album cover for ‘Licensed to Ill’ is vintage Beastie Boys with 3MTA3 on the tail which spells Eat Me backwards. LOL

Bruce Springsteen – Born in the U.S.A. (1984)

Bruce Springsteen’s album cover for his 1984 ‘Born in the U.S.A.’ album was pure working class with Springsteen in his trademark white t-shirt, jeans and worn ball cap stuffed into his back pocket standing in front of the American flag.

Devo – Oh, No! It’s Devo (1982)

Weird… Strange… Silly… Memorable. All of those words are perfect for both Devo and this album cover!

Grace Jones – Island Life (1985)

Grace Jones’ album cover for ‘Island Life’ depicts the model/actress/singer in an iconic pose that solidifies this album as one of the best album covers of the 80’s and beyond!

The Smiths – For Meat Is Murder (1985)

It’s no surprise that devout vegan Morrissey decided to choose an image of a Vietnam War soldier with the slogan “Meat is Murder” on his helmet for their ‘For Meat is Murder’ album. The soldier actually had written the statement “Make War Not Love” on his helmet…

N.W.A. – Straight Outta Compton (1988)

No words are really needed to describe the social message that N.W.A.’s ‘Straight Outta Compton’ album conveyed.
