Blondie’s music video for Rapture made its TV debut in the U.S. on Solid Gold on January 31, 1981. It also holds the distinction of being the first rap video ever broadcast on MTV, and it was part of MTV’s first 90-video rotation. The video features cameos from Fab Five Freddy and graffiti artists Lee Quinones and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Rapture was a huge worldwide hit topping both the Billboard Hot 100 and Dance Club Songs charts in the U.S., and peaking in the top five in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK. Enjoy this look back at the first rap video MTV ever played!
