In 1980, Talking Heads released their fourth studio album, Remain in Light, which featured one of their most memorable songs. Once in a Lifetime was released as the lead single in 1981, and it became their first top 20 hit in the UK, peaking at number 14.

NPR named Once in a Lifetime one of the 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame lists it as one of the 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.

The music video for Once in a Lifetime was choreographed by Toni Basil, who became famous herself the following year in 1982 when her song and video for Mickey took over the world.
