Eddie Murphy made his first appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson on January 1, 1982. At the time, his star was just starting to rise as he was one of the most popular actors on Saturday Night Live, and the following year, he released his legendary stand-up comedy special Eddie Murphy Delirious.

Over the next decade, Eddie became one of the most popular actors and comedians in the world with box office hits like 48 Hours, Beverly Hills Cop, and Coming to America. He also released another stand-up comedy special in 1987 called Eddie Murphy Raw. And, let’s not forget his musical career. During the ’80s, he released three albums and scored two top 30 hits on the Hot 100 charts including a number two hit in 1985 for Party All The Time.

Enjoy this look back at Eddie Murphy’s first stand-up comedy routine on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson from January 1, 1982.

And, just for fun, enjoy a look back at our favorite comedy bit from Delirious, the Ice Cream Man is Coming, as well was his music video for Party All The Time!
