In 1989, Janet Jackson released her fourth studio album titled Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814. The album spawned seven top five songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart including four number one songs. 1989’s Rhythm Nation was a number two hit on the Hot 100 chart, but hit number one on the R&B chart.
The music video for Rhythm Nation was a massive success. The video won the Best Choreography and Best Dance Video awards at the MTV VMA’s, and Jackson won the Director’s Award, Best Female Video Artist, and the Music Video Award for Artistic Achievement at the Billboard Awards. The long-form video for Rhythm Nation won a Grammy Award for Best Long Form Music Video, and Slant Magazine listed it among the Greatest Music Videos of All Time in 2003.
