On February 4, 1982, Tom Hanks made his first appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. At the time, he was still a struggling actor who was on the TV sitcom Bosom Buddies with Peter Colari. During this appearance, he talked to Johnny about why he was practicing to be a street juggler as well as about the time he helped the boiler man fix the furnace in his tiny NYC apartment building. It’s really fascinating to watch interviews like this on Carson. Hanks was the same funny guy that we all grew to love in his ’80s movies Splash, Bachelor Party, and The Money Pit, but during this appearance, you could tell that he was working really hard to try and impress Johnny and the audience. Little did he, nor we know at the time that he would become one of the most famous actors of all time.
