Coming to America is a 1988 American romantic comedy film directed by John Landis and starring Eddie Murphy as Prince Akeem Joffer, the crown prince of Zamunda, who travels to the United States to find a woman he can marry. It is the first installment in the Coming to America franchise.
The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $300 million worldwide against a production budget of $35 million. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Costume Design and Best Makeup.
The film follows Prince Akeem as he travels to the United States to find a woman he can marry. He disguises himself as a poor man and works at a fast food restaurant. He meets Lisa McDowell (Shari Headley), the daughter of the owner of the restaurant, and they fall in love. However, Akeem’s identity is revealed and he is forced to return to Zamunda.
Coming to America is one of my all time favorite movies from any decade! There are so many hilarious scenes in the movie, but one of my favorite scenes is when the late Louie Anderson’s character gives Akeem and Semmi, played by Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall, a pep talk about how he started on clean up, but now he’s washing lettuce, and soon will be on fries. Then, the grill, and in a year or two, he’ll make assistant manager, and that’s when the big bucks start rolling in.
Enjoy this look back at this classic scene from 1988’s Coming to America!
