In 1983, Bananarama released their second album, a self-titled album that featured one of 1984’s biggest songs. Cruel Summer was a top ten hit on the Hot 100 charts, peaking at number nine. It was the groups first top 40 hit in the US although they had scored a two top 20 dance hits in the US with 1982’s Really Saying Something featuring Fun Boy Three and Shy Boy, peaking at numbers 16 and 14 respectively on the Dance charts. Cruel Summer’s popularity in the US skyrocketed when it was included in 1984’s Karate Kid.
Bananarama scored two more huge hits in the US during the ’80s with Venus, a number one hit on the Hot 100 charts in 1986, and I Heard A Rumour, a number four hit on the Hot 100 charts.
